Cricket is not just a game; it is an emotion for millions. It is a game of gentlemen, and the viewers are smart. Madan Shamsher JBR is often called the “Father of Nepali Cricket” because he brought cricket to Nepal in the 1920s and arranged many matches and events for it.

The Nepal National Cricket Team’s story shows how determination, teamwork, and never giving up can lead to success. They’ve had a tough journey with not enough resources, a proper stadium to practice, and less capital. But they didn’t let that stop them. Instead, they showed amazing strength, determination, and love for the game. Even when things got hard, they kept going, inspiring others to do the same and never give up on their goals.

Nepal’s good performances in Division Five tournaments helped them move up to higher divisions like Division Four and Three. As they played against other new cricket teams, they got better and learned a lot, which made them improve their cricket skills step by step. In 2018, Nepal achieved a big success in cricket when the International Cricket Council (ICC) gave it the One Day International (ODI) status. This was a huge deal for Nepal cricket because it allowed their national team to play ODI matches against other strong cricket teams worldwide. After becoming an ODI nation, Nepal faced several problems in the batting department. Opening order collapse, middle order partnership death over adapting to the situation, these problems lead Nepal to loss in many major tournaments. 

Anil Kumar Sah is a Nepalese cricketer who made his List A debut for Nepal during the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament on February 12, 2018. He was also among the eleven players selected to participate in Nepal’s first One Day International (ODI) match against the Netherlands in August 2018. Sah came back to the national team during the Canada series in 2024. His brilliant century and half-century against Canada will be remembered in the history of cricket. Sah is hope for Nepal, who is not only a solution for the batting unit but an inspiration for millions of young people. Cricket brings people together in Nepal, uniting them to support the national team. Matches are like big community gatherings where fans from all walks of life come together, creating a sense of togetherness and friendship. Additionally, cricket has become a source of income for many in Nepal. Players, coaches, and others involved in cricket can earn money through sponsorship deals, TV rights, selling merchandise, and cricket-related tourism. This helps boost Nepal’s economy as well. Through bilateral series, tournaments, and friendly matches, Nepal can foster cultural exchange and strengthen diplomatic relations with other countries.

In 2023, Nepal won the ACC Premier Cup, which allowed them to qualify for the Asia Cup for the first time. This was a big moment for Nepali cricket and showed they were becoming more recognized and respected in Asian cricket. As Rajarshians, we had the privilege of being part of history by witnessing the match between Nepal and India in Sri Lanka. Being interviewed by ESPN Cricinfo during the Asia Cup tour in Sri Lanka and discussing Nepali cricket was a significant accomplishment for all of us. Nepal’s accomplishments in cricket have brought the nation into the spotlight on the international sports scene. Their involvement in ICC events like the Cricket World Cup Qualifiers and T20 World Cup has boosted Nepal’s prominence and reputation worldwide. Nepal has managed to establish numerous records in the realm of cricket.

According to the latest ranking (18 March 2024) of the ICC, Nepal is in fifteenth position in the ODI.

Cricket serves multiple purposes in Nepal, acting as a symbol of resilience, unity, and hope. The Nepal National Cricket Team’s journey is a remarkable tale of resilience, determination, and teamwork. Cricket in Nepal means more than just a game; it represents the country’s strength, togetherness, and optimism. The Nepal National Cricket Team’s story shows how determination, working together, and never giving up can lead to success, even in tough times. As the team inspires Nepali people, cricket becomes a symbol of hope, showing that Nepal can tackle any difficulty with its strong spirit. Beyond just a sport, it contributes to national pride, brings communities together, boosts economic growth, empowers youth, and fosters international connections.
